The Reborn Noble Girl is Hard to Find | Chapter 43: The Triumphant Dance Performance

Chapter 43: The Triumphant Dance Performance

The piercing gaze of the Prince of Xuanqing had left an impression on Han Yan. It was subtle yet intense, as if capable of seeing through her thoughts, making her realize this prince could be even more challenging to deal with than the crown prince himself.

As the banquet proceeded, a sweet, lively voice rang out from the grand hall, catching everyone’s attention.

“Your daughter pays her respects to the Emperor.”

Han Yan looked toward the source of the voice. A young girl of about fourteen or fifteen stepped out gracefully, adorned in an elaborate outfit of shimmering pearls, a vibrant purple pleated skirt, and an embroidered gold-threaded robe. Her eyes sparkled like polished obsidian, and her smile exuded both charm and regal elegance.

It was none other than Princess Yunni, a familiar face to Han Yan. Memories surfaced of a brief encounter with this vibrant royal, and she realized she hadn’t anticipated meeting her here tonight.

The Emperor appeared slightly caught off guard but made no effort to mask his indulgence for his favorite daughter. His expression softened with curiosity about her intentions.

Princess Yunni tilted her head playfully, her smile deepening. “Tonight’s palace banquet is a grand occasion. I have prepared a dance to offer my blessings to Father and to pray for the enduring prosperity of the Dazong Empire.”

A wave of murmurs rippled through the crowd. It was highly unconventional for a royal woman to perform publicly, a domain traditionally reserved for entertainers. Such a display might tarnish her noble reputation. The Emperor’s face darkened slightly at her audacious proposal. Yet, her rationale made it hard for him to outright reject her.

Han Yan watched the scene unfold with a touch of admiration for Yunni’s boldness. Few would dare to act so brazenly in the face of the Emperor’s visible displeasure. This kind of freedom was enviable, even if it came at a risk.

The Emperor’s mounting anger brought a hushed tension to the hall. No one dared to speak until a calm male voice interrupted.

“Father, I think Royal Sister’s idea has merit.”

All heads turned to the speaker. A young man, radiating charm and wearing the unmistakable attire of the royal family, had risen. His presence was commanding yet amiable. Han Yan deduced he must be another prince.

The Emperor’s gaze scrutinized him for a moment. “Seventh Son, what is your reasoning?”

Seventh Prince… Han Yan’s mind raced. So this was the famous Seventh Prince.

The prince bowed respectfully before answering. “Father, this evening celebrates General Cheng’s triumphant victory—a joy shared by the entire nation. Royal Sister’s dance, performed with such a noble intention, is appropriate. However, her joy should not be solitary. The ladies present, known for their grace and talents, could also contribute to the evening’s festivities. This way, the celebration becomes a shared delight, and Royal Sister’s performance will be in good company.”

His words struck a perfect balance, alleviating the Emperor’s concerns about propriety while endearing him to Princess Yunni. He had skillfully included the noble ladies in the celebration, ensuring that Yunni’s performance wouldn’t stand alone as an unconventional act.

Han Yan couldn’t help but marvel at the Seventh Prince’s finesse. His words flattered both sides, avoiding offense while creating an opportunity for alliances to form in the guise of entertainment. Such a tactful individual was undoubtedly a formidable figure to have as an opponent.

The Emperor, appeased, nodded. “That is reasonable. Yunni, you may proceed with your dance. Ladies, feel free to showcase your talents as well. Let tonight be a feast for the senses.”

A ripple of excitement coursed through the assembly. The noblewomen’s faces lit up with anticipation, seeing this as an opportunity to shine before the gathered elites. Han Yan noticed the subtle glances cast toward the male guests, particularly at the enigmatic Prince of Xuanqing and the striking Helian Yu. For many, this was not just a performance but a chance to impress potential suitors or elevate their families’ prestige.

Zhuang Yushan, visibly eager, clenched her fists in determination. Her gaze flitted between the two distinguished men, betraying her ambitions. Han Yan smirked internally. Does she truly think she can climb so high? Even as a concubine, she wouldn’t qualify.

Li Jiaqi, meanwhile, exuded a self-assured air, her expression a mixture of confidence and competitiveness. Catching Han Yan’s glance, she sneered, her words tinged with mockery. “Zhuang Yan, you seem quite composed. Do you not have a performance prepared?”

Han Yan raised an eyebrow at the pointed comment. As the daughter of a third-rank official, she was far from a central figure in such a gathering. Yet, the idea of competing for attention grated on her.

Feigning modesty, Han Yan replied, “I fear my talents pale in comparison to someone as accomplished as Miss Li. It’s best I stay in the shadows and leave the stage to those who truly deserve it.”

Li Jiaqi wasn’t about to let her off so easily. “Oh, but everyone knows how diligently you practice your embroidery and music. Surely your talents are not to be underestimated.”

Before Han Yan could counter, Zhuang Yushan chimed in, her tone sickly sweet. “Indeed, Fourth Sister. Your music is so enchanting that even butterflies are drawn to it. Tonight, you must share such beauty with us.”

The implication was clear: they were intent on forcing her into the spotlight. Yet, Han Yan remained unflustered. She smiled faintly at Zhuang Yushan. “Elder Sister must be mistaken. I have not touched an instrument since Mother fell ill three years ago. But I must thank you for your concern. It is touching how thoroughly you’ve inquired about my past.”

Her words were laced with a subtle accusation, implying that Zhuang Yushan’s curiosity about her personal affairs was inappropriate. The latter’s face flushed with embarrassment as the room’s attention shifted.

Han Yan continued with a serene smile. “Moreover, I would not dare presume to perform in such esteemed company. As the saying goes, ‘There is always someone better.’ It would be unwise to risk embarrassing our family.”

Her pointed glance at Zhuang Yushan underscored the warning: any misstep would reflect poorly on the entire Zhuang household.

Though silenced for the moment, Zhuang Yushan’s eyes burned with resentment. Leaning toward Li Jiaqi, she whispered conspiratorially, clearly plotting her next move. Han Yan observed them coldly, her mind already preparing for the inevitable confrontation.
